Coupe Buteurs
Le Championnat d'Angleterre de football est appelé English Premier League o FA Premier League ou Premiership. Ce championnat regroupe 20 équipes qui disputent chacune 38 matchs. À la fin de la saison, les 3 équipes totalisant le plus faible nombre de points sont reléguées. Ce championnat est l'un des plus prestigieux au monde, et est réputé pour être l'un des plus physiques en raison de l'engagement physique et du calendrier surchargé. Un progrès fut toutefois réalisé quand le championnat passa de 22 à 20 clubs en 1995.
Le championnat est créé sous la direction de William McGregor en 1888 avec 12 clubs qui s'affrontent deux fois dans la saison, une fois à domicile, l'autre à l'extérieur. Cette forme de compétition est inédite. Jusque là, on se contenta d'abord des matches amicaux, puis des coupes à élimination directe. Le calendrier était très chargé en 1888, et plusieurs clubs ne purent pas aménager leur calendrier sans faire l'impasse sur la Coupe d'Angleterre. Une seconde division est mise en place en 1892.
Le coup d'envoi de la première journée du premier championnat eut lieu le 8 septembre 1888. Le premier club sacré champion au printemps 1889 termina la saison invaincu aussi bien en championnat (18 victoires et 4 nuls) qu'en Coupe. Preston North End hérite alors du surnom d'Invicibles et confirme la saison suivante en remportant un second titre.
La Premier League se détache de la League en 1892 pour des raisons financières. Après cette date, l'élite anglaise prend le nom d'English Premier League ou de Premiership. L'équivalent de la D2 est alors la Division 1 de la League. Nouvelle évolution en 2004 avec la modification de label pour la Division 1 de la League (D2) qui prend le nom de League Championship. La Division 1 de la League devient alors l'équivalent de la D3.
La Premier League sponsorise son nom depuis 1993. Les bières Carling sont sponsors de l'épreuve entre 1993 et 2001. Depuis 2001, c'est la banque Barclays qui prend le relais avec un contrat qui court jusqu'en 2008, au minimum.
