Sa voix est particulièrement notable sur les hits "I Want You Back", "I'll Be There", "Dancing Machine", "I Am Love"...
En 1975, il entame une carrière solo. En 1979 il sera nommé aux Grammy Awards comme meilleur performance masculine de R&B et aura quelques succès dans les années 1980, notamment avec "When The Rain Begins To Fall", son duo avec la chanteuse Pia Zadora.

Du 3 au 28 janvier 2007, il participa à l'émission de télé-réalité Celebrity Big Brother UK.

 

Marié à Hazel Gordy (photo) (la fille du très célèbre Barry Gordy qui lanca les Jackson Five), le 15 décembre 1973 Ses enfants : Jermaine Jr (1977), Autumn (1978), Dawn (1985), Jaimy (1987).

En ménage ensuite avec Margaret Maldonado. Ses enfants Jeremy (1986) et Jourdyn (1989). Séparés en 1994. Marié une deuxième fois avec Alejandra Geneviève Oaiza, en 1995, l'ex-femme de son frère Randy. 2 enfants : Jermajesty (2000) et Jaafar (1996). Divorcés en 2004. La même année il se marie avec Halima Rashid.
